Bessie Smith – Mean for a Reason by Dindga McCannon, Mixed Media, 16 inches x 18 inches
Work is on loan for this exhibition.
“I gave this work that title because she does look mean, and considering the times she lived through, she had every right. Women like her set the stage for those of us who came after…who would even dream of being a woman and an artist. She did it, and in many ways, was successful. She is one of my She-Roes.”
Dindga McCannon celebrates over 50 years of being an artist; she pursued art as a fiber artist, writer/illustrator, painter, costume designer, muralist, and much more. Her fusion of traditional needle work – a skill given to her by her mother and grandmother – with fine arts, she includes drawing, painting, printmaking, and mixed media in her works, experimenting or exploring between the “what if” and “what might happen.”
