Kikesa Kimbwala DeRobles is a Congolese-Mexican American artist. Her portraits address the fractured and fragmented identities of vulnerable peoples, either inherently embedded in their colonial histories, or as the product of racial, social, and sexual traumas. She regularly employs a protective maternal gaze to dissect the violent and tender experience of caring for a Black child. Her paintings, as altars used to protect the spiritual and physical bodies of their subjects, are transparent in the dichotomy between celebrating one’s sacred humanity and a helpless awareness of their devastating social circumstances.
