This is a continuous series of artworks that’s telling stories, question, evoke and start a conversation through chairs. Chairs in these paintings are used to represent different positions in the society, a person sitting on that chair can be anyone. Who sit and who doesn’t sit on it? Is the person sitting on a chair worthy of it? Do they use or abuse the chair? How does the chair affect them? Do they control the chair or the chair controls them?
Shiija B. Masele (1992) is a painter and makeup artist based in Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania. She has a bachelor degree in Political Science and Public Administration from the University of Dares-Salaam (2015). She began creating artwork at a young age, having been inspired by her father, and in 2020 was part of the first class at the Nafasi Academy, a series of artistic workshops hosted by Nafasi Art Space in Tanzania. Her artwork is informed by her educational background in politics, and she uses her
multimedia paintings to express her understanding of different topics.
