About the work: It is about faithfulness, womanhood and growth. Most of my works are themed around Mbusa imagery. These are secret emblems with hidden meanings about life and are used as teaching aids during marriage and coming of age (for girls) initiation ceremonies, which is practiced among the Bemba of Northern Province of Zambia.
Lawrence Yombwe: Born in 1956 in Kalulushi, he lives and works in Livingstone. He earned an Art Diploma from the African Literature Center in Kitwe in 1980, an Advanced Certificate in Fine Arts from Croydon College (UK) in 1986 and an Art Teacher and Graphic Art Diploma from Evelyn Hone College of Applied Arts & Commerce (Lusaka) in 1990. In 1994 he traveled to the U.S.A. where he studied Arts Administration and he later set up the documentation center at the Visual Arts Council headquarters (Henry Tayali Visual Arts Center) in Lusaka. He is the initiator of various Christian Art Workshops and exhibitions. He worked as a graphic artist for the Ndola Catholic Diocese and Mission Press from 1981 to 1983. He taught art in schools for many years in Zambia and Botswana. He has held numerous solo exhibitions locally and abroad and he has won numerous awards. He currently runs Wayi Wayi Art Studio and Gallery with his artist wife Agnes Yombwe in Livingstone.
