Julia D. Shaw is a self-taught textile mixed media artist living in New York City. In 2016 she rekindled her childhood dream of becoming an artist when she began attending an inter-generational art class. Her interest in drawing and painting with acrylics on canvas evolved to include textile and mixed-media artwork. The 2020 COVID-19 pandemic quarantine filled Julia with stress, anxiety, feelings of helplessness, and at times hopelessness. However, amid adversity, Julia’s faith empowered her to shift her mindset and focus on creating art. The creative process became a very therapeutic and healing experience. Julia’s artwork expresses her cultural narrative which infuses the richness of her African and Native-American heritage, along with her Black-American female insights and experiences. Julia’s love for textiles, textures and vibrant colors of African prints is the core of her artwork. Combining, reinventing and up-cycling items like jewelry, buttons, seashells and feathers, along with anything that inspires her to express an array of feelings are woven into her artistic style. Julia’s work is functional art on canvas, vases, wine bottles, wig heads and other unconventional items.
In her “Create & Chat” Art Box and Workshop, Julia shares the experience of creating home décor with vibrant African prints while listening to light music and inspirational conversation. Artists of all ages can design a one-of-a-kind vase, flower/plant pot, wine bottle or journal. This fun-fill hands on workshop can be taught in-person or virtually. Julia’s artwork has been part of several group art exhibitions in New York City with Jamaica Center for Arts & Learning, Fulton Arts Fair-Art Walk 2022, Bayside Historical Society, in addition to several annual Social Justice Art Exhibits with Art Transforms and Southern Queens Park Association’s “Colors in Black” Art Exhibit. Julia is the mother of two beautiful and smart daughters with three inspiring grandchildren, residing in Queens, NY.
