The Diary Of African Nun by SenaTues Alexander, 2021, Mixed Media: collage, novel print, newspaper and acrylic on canvas, 40 x 40 inches.
In this piece, Alexander portrays the visual expression of a Ugandan nun who feels conflicted and doubtful about her religious dogmas – a story that inspired the film “The Diary of African Nun” (1977) directed by Julie Dash. The film is a retelling of the nun’s story which was first introduced through “In Love and Trouble” by novelist, Alice Walker.
SenaTues Alexander was born in Accra, Ghana in 1986. He attended college. A self-taught artist, he is a figurative painter exploring identity and focused on abstract realism expressionism and portraiture. Using fundamental painting techniques, he experiments with application and collage. His work is inspired by nature, his surroundings, books, magazines, movies, television shows, music, travel, emotions, and memories. He lives in Accra Mamprobi City.
