An everyday moment waiting for a train in the New York City subway system.
Evelyn Kalubi is a Zambian and Congolese artist currently residing in Brooklyn. The conglomeration of African art, 90s alternative American music and social disparities color her art work. Her work is influenced primarily by the conflicting cultural upbringing of my Zambian and Congolese heritage while living in mid western America. She uses a host of different mediums, from photography, illustration, and painting, to tell continue challenging the idea of her identity. The continual attempt is to produce pieces that challenge the notion of blackness and add to the create an idea of Afro-futurism. Some key themes explored revolve around identity and cultural assimilation, and cultural retention from an African perspective. She studied design at DAAP at the University of Cincinnati.
