Reginald Rousseau is a Haitian-born and Harlem-raised Contemporary Folkloric Artist, based in New York City. He has been balancing his time between, creating new works, exhibiting, participating in residencies, and collaborating on a wide range of projects since 2010. Reginald’s multidisciplinary practice includes drawings, paintings, mixed-media assemblages, and graphic illustrations. His artistic style, which he affectionately coined “Tropical Aesthetics”, can be described as an artful layering of Haitian Naive Art, African Textile, Gothic Stained Glass, Art Nouveau, Urban Art, and Modern Abstraction. With a background in Studio Arts and Architectural Design, he embraces multiple mediums, materials, and methods that graphically embody the content of his works. As per Reginald, “My work is a reflection of all that I am and yet to be. Through my artistic practice, my aims are to advance, reimagine, and reframe BIPOC [Black, Indigenous, and people of color] representations as well as illuminate the richness & complexity of our identity, life, spirituality, and culture.”
