NKISI A SPIRIT LIVES HERE by Cassandra Martin, 2021, wood, iron, beads, misc. charms, 11in x 6in x 6.5in.
Throughout the Congo Basin in Central Africa, there exist groups of practitioners who work as healers, diviners, and mediators who protect the general population against Black Magic. They are known as Bangangas and they believe their spiritual gifts are bequeathed to them from communing with spirits of ancestors – the dead. These shamans create figures called nkisi which they claim to invest with ancestral spirits which are used to perform shamanic works.
Cassandra Martin is a mixed media, textile and assemblage artist. Most of my work is created in commemoration of maternal and paternal ancestral lines. Most of my materials are either found, gifted, or previously on hand in my living space. Intuition and spirit exclusively guide me in selecting materials and determining how they should be used and assembled. Generally, my work symbolizes Africa spirituality and religion from a contemporary basis, vintage Americana, and ancient divination systems.
