Vanezza Cruz
Cayendo profundamente en ese oleaje cósmico de mi piel negra, 2018-2022, Acrylic paint, acrylic ink, paint markers, ballpoint pen, and adhesive vinyl on bristol board, 32in x 40 inches
In this psychological self-portrait, this painting encapsulates an expression of embracing my Blackness as a cosmic force, intertwined with ancestral legacies and personal revelations. It’s a visual ode to the depth, mystery, and beauty found within the intricacies of my identity, cocooned within the cosmic embrace of my Black skin. At the heart of the composition emerges a central otherworldly female figure, gracefully emerging from a dark blue pool, rising from depths of introspection. Against a backdrop of majestic pyramids, symbols of enduring strength and heritage, this figure is a visual representation of my continual exploration of self — embodying the complexities of my journey as a Black Latina woman. Constellations adorn her face, mapping the celestial landscape within. They mirror my inner cosmos, a cosmology of experiences, dreams, and resilience. A seashell as the ear harkens to childhood memories of my mother and whispers of heritage, creating an intimate connection to the rhythmic echoes of my roots. Wearing a corset as armor, as both protection and defiance against expectations, its use confronts societal constraints, my defiance of Eurocentric beauty norms, and cultural reclamation. This choice becomes a powerful visual language, declaring autonomy over my identity, my body and celebrating the diverse facets of my Black femininity.
