Lay With Me by Odessa Whitlock

Odessa Whitlock is a Black queer non-binary multidisciplinary artist based in Montclair, NJ. Their work focuses on shedding light on the experiences within the queer Black community through compelling short films, oil paintings, and recently, fabric and hair collages.

A distinctive aspect of Odessa’s art is their material gathering techniques. Since 2021, they have been saving their discarded braids, repurposing them to create textured braided sculptures and intricate hair and fabric collages. This unique approach not only adds depth and texture to their work but also infuses it with personal and cultural significance.

Odessa’s art has been showcased at notable venues including the Papermill Playhouse in Millburn, NJ, REM Studios in Manhattan, and the Canada Gallery in Tribeca. Through their diverse mediums and innovative techniques, Odessa continues to celebrate and elevate the vibrant experiences of the queer Black community.
