Description
Umang Shah was born and raised in the United States by parents of Indian origin. In adolescence, he was blessed to have spent summers in India which cultivated a deep love of Indian cultures and values. In addition, it made traveling second nature and continues to draw him to other countries and their cultures.
Graduating from the Rhode Island School of Design with Degrees in Fine Arts and Architecture and becoming a registered Architect and Director of Construction Project Management, has only enriched his visual reserve, while giving him the opportunity to explore using multiple subjectivities and a variety of materials. The paintings and drawings have developed into case studies utilizing but not limited to; charcoal, ink, acrylic and printed materials, providing unique textures through fonts and text.
Intersections:
In his work, there are three main drivers; layering, transparency and process. The layering provides patterns which work in harmony and sometimes juxtapose each other, thus becoming an intersection between the seen and unseen.
As a daily discipline, painting and drawing have become my passion as well as his personal release from a structured day. Working on hid art certainly puts him in a meditative state of mind. This allows a self-conscious approach to the overall production.
He believes that his process is fluid and free from inhibition, with the ultimate goal of fine tuning the art piece(s). His work has been interpreted by some as complex landscapes but to him, it represents his particular state of mind and his physical location. He hopes his work engages the viewer and creates a moment for memory and dialogue.
