Norviyo (Good Brother) by Winfred Nana Amoah, 2022, Textiles and acrylic on canvas, 153cm X 153cm
The Hohoe-based multimedia artist, Winfred Nana Amoah’s series of collages rely on fabric and painting techniques to investigate the ideas of community building in Ghana–especially of Hohoe. Behind the smiling faces, the acrylic paints on his canvas is the idea of bonding. In his practice, Winfred uses different approaches to keep his materials bonded–gluing, sewing and stapling. This practice is reflective of the heterogeneous nature of Ghanaian demographics and the harmonious living thereof. He is however not blind to the chaos in the somewhat harmony as his works employ diverging materials in creating a portrait. Considering the societal reaction to waste materials, his vernacular approaches seek to change narratives and encourage repurposing of used materials.
His works may appear sophisticated in the light of modern-day technological appeals; yet, they are easily relatable and equally fit into the contemporary space of artistry.
