Rooted Vision: Future’s Echo, 2023, Mixed Media on Reclaimed Pallet Wood, 40 x 31.25 1.5 inches
This artwork embodies the profound connection between Haiti’s spiritual past and its present. Evoking the imagery of the valiant Dahomey Soldiers it serves as a testament to their enduring influence as they enter Haiti’s consciousness. Crafted on reclaimed pallet wood, each plank symbolizes the layers of history and memory that remain deeply ingrained within the Haitian community. The art piece challenges the demonization of Vodou (or Vodon) practices, shedding light on its rich traditions and the spiritual rites that have persisted against all odds. The interconnectedness of the wood panels is reminiscent of the stories passed down through griots, the traditional storytellers who ensure that history remains alive and palpable. The striking profile of the figure, with its vibrant colors and pronounced facial features, represents a direct link to ancestry, a reflection of the soldiers’ courage and the resilient spirit that they have bequeathed to future generations.

Andre graduated from Saint Peters College, earning a BA in Visual Arts. Currently, he works as an in-studio artist in Jersey City, NJ, where he continues to explore the infinite possibilities of mixed media.
