Trinket Treehouse, 2023, Mixed Media: old clock, paper cup, paper plate and hair braids, 12 x 12 inches, Not for Sale
I created this in the spring of 2023, from an old clock, paper cup, paper plate and my braids. The inspiration of this piece was due to the ends of my braids looking like roots. I create functional art that I can use in my room and decided it was only fair to create a home for my many trinkets. A place they may lay that holds the history of the past.
Odessa Whitlock is a Queer Black Antiguan person based in Montclair, New Jersey, and currently a Junior at Montclair State University. My work consists of paintings, clothing, illustrations and Repurposed Functional Art pieces navigating ideas of Heritage, identity, mental health, sexuality, love, play, rest and agency. I use functional art as a platform to convey a lighthearted perspective on my past traumas and current growth. My process is more important than the outcome of my work——meaning my work is a form of expression or release not a product.
